It's been a long time since I last used Unity3D. Back then you had to prepare your animations in Blender or Maya.
After that you could simply trigger the different animation sequences from a unity script, wasn't that difficult.
The thing that was difficult was to get the animations to not look completely retarded. (Remember the first versions of 4.2 they had the same problem).

Yeah I've been trying to figure it out too. I mainly use blender though for most of my stuff. I mainly do animations. It is far too easy to do it in blender. If you need any help with blender, I can help a little, but not unity.
